Exposure Explorer is an interactive web dashboard designed to support training and capacity-building activities on Equal-Life indicators and urban exposure concepts, with a focus on understanding how urban environments influence health outcomes across the life course.

Purpose of the tool

The Exposure Explorer dashboard supports training and educational activities related to Equal-Life indicators and urban exposure pathways.It is designed to help learners explore how different urban environments influence health outcomes—particularly during childhood—through didactic content and short interactive exercises.

The tool enables users to:

  • Understand key exposure indicators (e.g. greenness, accessibility, noise);

  • Explore simplified geospatial examples embedded within learning materials;

  • Reflect on urban inequalities through guided questions and mini-exercises.

Classification of tool

Educational / informational interactive learning tool combining geo-context elements.

The dashboard integrates:

  • Slides and flashcards;

  • Lightweight interactive components;

  • Structured exploration views.

It is based on geospatial awareness, but does not require advanced geospatial computation or direct GIS interaction from the end user.

Required skills

For standard users

  • Ability to navigate and interact with web-based exploration tools;

  • Familiarity with learning platforms and simple visualisations.

For advanced users / maintainers

  • Basic understanding of React and TypeScript;

  • Experience with TailwindCSS for layout and styling;

  • Ability to install and run Node.js applications locally;

  • Familiarity with Vite for development server and build configuration.

Outputs

The dashboard provides three main categories of outputs:

  • Learning outputsShort-form educational content explaining exposure indicators and how they interact with different life stages.

  • Exploration outputsInteractive views for:

    • outcomes,

    • factor lists,

    • timelines,

    • factor matrices.

  • Reflective outputsPrompts and discussion elements that can be integrated into teaching sessions to support reflection on urban inequalities and health-related exposure pathways.

Relation to other tools
  • This tool can be seen as an educational and interpretative layer within the Equal-Life Toolbox, supporting the understanding of how exposure indicators are organised, interpreted and connected across the life course, rather than performing exposure computation itself.

  • It complements analytical and modelling tools by preparing users conceptually to engage with more technical workflows (e.g. exposure modelling, geospatial analysis, or statistical assessment), providing shared definitions, simplified examples and contextual explanations of indicators.

  • It supports the Equal-Life Toolbox’s goal of fostering interdisciplinary accessibility to exposome research by translating complex exposure concepts (physical, social and built environment) into interactive learning materials that can be used in training, workshops and dissemination activities.

  • The dashboard helps bridge data-driven tools and policy- or practice-oriented discussions, enabling reflection on urban inequalities, childhood exposure pathways and health-related outcomes without requiring technical expertise or direct data manipulation.
