Purpose of the tool
The Urban Exposure dashboard supports training and capacity-building activities on Equal-Life indicators and urban exposure concepts.It is designed to help learners explore how different urban environments shape exposure pathways—particularly during childhood—through didactic content and short interactive exercises.
The tool enables users to:
Understand key exposure indicators (e.g. greenness, accessibility, noise);
Explore simplified geospatial examples embedded in learning materials;
Reflect on urban inequalities through guided questions and mini-exercises.
Classification of tool
Educational / informational tool with interactive components(learning dashboard with slides, flashcards and lightweight interactive elements).
The tool is based on geospatial awareness, but does not require advanced geographic computation or GIS interaction from the end user.
Required skills
For standard use:
Basic familiarity with web navigation;
Ability to read and interpret educational content and simple visualisations.
For content customisation or extension:
Basic knowledge of React and TypeScript;
Familiarity with TailwindCSS for layout and styling.
Required open-data / administrative data
No external data are required for standard usage.
Indicator descriptions and examples (e.g. NDVI, access to green spaces, environmental noise) are pre-compiled and embedded within the application.
Optionally, the tool can be extended by:
Linking additional Equal-Life datasets;
Integrating open datasets (e.g. OpenStreetMap, public environmental indicators) when developing new slides or flashcards.
Output
An interactive web learning experience combining:
Slides and flashcards explaining exposure indicators;
Geospatial examples and simplified metrics;
Mini-quizzes and reflective prompts.
Educational content supporting discussion on:
Urban inequalities;
Exposure pathways in childhood;
Relationships between urban form and health-related exposures.
Relation to other tools
Urban Exposure complements analytical and modelling tools within the Equal-Life ecosystem by:
Translating complex indicators into accessible educational content;
Supporting training, dissemination and stakeholder engagement activities;
Acting as a bridge between technical exposure metrics and conceptual understanding.
